Walking into the restaurant, both sets of parents are already seated with looks of pure glee. As we approach, they all stand and hugs commence.
Florence, Mason’s mom, hugs me tight then holds me at arm’s length to look at my dress. “Darlin’, you’re gorgeous. I love this dress. Mason, tell your bride she looks beautiful.”
Mason doesn’t even turn our way as he takes his seat at the table. “I already have, mom,” he grumbles as he picks up a menu then looks over at me. “You look beautiful, Callie.”
He did no such thing! And I don’t want the compliment after his mother strong armed him. He looked in pain when I tried to be intimate with him at the house. Looking at Florence, she shakes her head at her son, and I shrug.
“Thank you. My mom bought this for me a few days ago. It fits perfectly,” I say winking at my mom. But I don’t miss this disapproving glance she throws at Mason, who is still more focused on placing his order and getting back to the office than enjoying this meal together.
“Well, you did good, Momma,” Mason’s mom says.
Shortly after sitting, the waitress arrives and takes our drink orders. Judson, Mason’s dad, orders a few bottles of wine. I have to steal a cheeky peek at my dad. He hates it when people throw their wealth around by ordering bottles for the table. He used to always say, “If I wanted wine, I’d order it myself. Maybe I want a damn beer. I don’t need your snooty falooty wine that cost more than my boots.”
Man, I love my daddy. I can see his brows furrow, as he tries to simmer down his pride. He’s a good man, and I wish Mason was more like him. Even Judson, with his money and wealth sometimes clouding his judgement, is a good man. I’m not sure where Mason falls anymore. The closer we get to our wedding the less I feel like I know who he truly is.
The wine comes, and dinner orders are taken, but I feel like I’m underwater. The weight of the doubts I’m feeling are becoming a physical crutch. I sit in my chair as our parents discuss the ins and outs of the wedding and how there seems to be good weather headed our way. Trying to listen, their voices sound a million miles away with the worries circling me mind.
Turning to my fiancé, I see him checked out of the conversation. Much like any other time we’ve tried wedding planning, he’s sitting on his phone smiling like a loon as if whomever he’s talking to is more exciting and special than me and our big day.
I clear my throat and his snaps up from the phone. “Something funny?” I ask.
“Yeah, sorry. One of the guys from work is making fun of me because I’m whipped by you.”
Rolling my eyes, letting out a sigh, I stand and every eye at the table turns to me expectantly, except for Mason’s.
